Asone of the key players of the London jazz scene, Theon Cross has beendominating airwaves and stages. He's part of a thriving family network of youngLondon-based musicians who have regularly supported one another in stretchingand re-shaping the boundaries of the jazz genre. Cross’ recent work includesrecording and performing as part of award-winning four-piece Sons of Kemet,playing with South East-based collective Steam Down, as well as collaboratingwith the likes of Moses Boyd, Jon Batiste & Stay Human, Pharoahe Monch,Emeli Sandé andKano ontheir individual projects.
Inaddition to his work in these projects he skillfully leads his ownpowerful and eclectic trio exploring the diverse range of musical sounds ofLondon through his compositions. His debut release ‘Aspirations’ was one of the mostimpactful of 2015 putting him up for two nominations for Best Instrumentalistof the year (Jazz Fm Awards 2016) and Best Jazz Newcomer (Parliamentary Awards2016).
Hisdebut album ‘Fyah’, released in February 2019 on Gearbox Records, featuresLondon-based musicians Nubya Garcia and Moses Boyd. With critical acclaim, itreached #1 in the UK Jazz Charts and #23 in the US Billboard Jazz Charts. Init, Cross makes the tuba his own, mixing together early New Orleans bass lineinfluences as well as the synth soundscapes and rhythms from modern grime andtrap. His innovative style brings a new dynamic to the scene as he paves thegap between more traditional jazz styles and dance music.
